DHS 34 problem

Post by Juel72 »

Hi all,

I have a 124 Sport Coupe AC from 1969.

Totally original with the lovely 1438cc TC and all.

The engine is fitted with a Weber DHS 34 carb, and single plane manifold. But the carb are giving me some problems.

The problem is that it is not so smooth as it should be. When running high rpm there is no problem. It pulls ok all the way to the red mark on the rev counter.
But when accelerating from maybe 2500 rpm. it hesitates a second or two. then the second vacuum operated barrel kick in (I believe). I do not know if this is the way this carb is, but it is very noticeable when the second barrel kicks in. Almost like turbo lag in and old BMW 2002 Turbo :-)
If come around a corner in maybe second gear, and wants to accelerate. It hesitates a second, and then jumps forward.

I have cleaned and checked everything and adjusted the float. The acc pump is working just fine, all jets are cleaned. The vacuum diaphragm for the second barrel is also fine.

To me everything seems fine and in good order.

I am not aware of the sizes of the the standard jets in the DHS carb, but if someone can tell me it would be a great help.

Please advise me what to do to get this set-up to work more smoothly.

Best regards

I would re-inspect the secondary idle jet. It is not the accelerator pump (it does not handle barrel-to-barrel transitions like this). I would also remove and inspect the secondary emulsion tube and its chamber.
