I set out this morning to join up with Spidernut and RoyBatty at a car gathering up in Folsom, CA. These drive ins have been going on for awhile, I just have not had the Saturday opportunity to do so.
This is/was the longest drive I have taken in the spider since I have owned it. I loaded some tools just in case.....Well, the car ran great and didn't deliver any surprises One of my motivations was to give to RoyBatty a coupe radio console that came with my car. Good karma, I suppose
I avoid freeway driving for the most part in the spider as I don't find it enjoyable. On this drive, it was unavoidable. I drove pretty much 65-70 mph (except for a few congested area on the return) over 219 miles. My FI car got 29 mpg
How sweet it is!!!!

SU-WEET!!!
That's a mileage number to be proud of!
It was a pleasure to meet you today and thanks again for the center console piece.
Your '80 was a real beauty, very nice work.
Glad to hear the trip back was without drama.
Looking forward to meeting up again on your side of the state on a club drive sometime soon.

Re: How sweet it is!!!!
Sounds like fun. I'm always surprised when people consider a 200-mile trip to be a bit questionable, load up tools etc., especially for a newer FI motor*. My Coupe has been nearly problem free and I never have any second thoughts about just grabbing the keys and doing many hundreds of km on a weekend, i.e. up to the eastern Alps and back. I'm a bit spoiled, I guess, that I never am too far from any town. I just take a phone and I have roadside assistance, which I've never needed. I don't even check the oil that often; it hasn't burned a drop in 6 years. The only time I have problems (rough running, grumpy motor) is when I can't go on regular long drives. If I can get the time later this summer, I'm hoping to drive up to my friend's place in Hamburg, about 1'000 km away via the Nürburgring...

For driving at highway speeds, if you don't already have a wind breaker behind you, it makes a HUGE difference.

My Dad would do a 200 mile run in his 1926 Dodge and wow folks at the time for being able to do it while maintaining speeds of around 60 mph and only getting one or two flat tires on the trip.Redline wrote:Sounds like fun. Tools to bring would be what you could fit in an old leather tobacco pouch which would be an adjustable wrench, spark plug wrench, Ford Pliers, two screw drivers, flashlight, small coil of bailing wire, small coil of insulated wire (12 ga) and a small roll of BullDog tape.
Any Spider is a much more modern car and once you sort out the electric then a small coil of wire should get you running again if you do have to jump power to the ignition and such.
