Driving the Loneliest Highway
Wanted to share a recent weekend I had in my spider. I just had Will’s Imports in Salt Lake City work over my 81 Spider. After picking it up, I joined my brother and his Fiat Spider in a July 4th car rally with a bunch of other classics along the parade route. After the holiday celebrations it was then time to drive it the 560 miles home. Fulfilling a desire I have had for ages, I decided to drive the Loneliest Highway—US 50—across Utah and Nevada. It was me, my dog, and 2 lanes of pavement. Together we enjoyed a number of 7500+ ft passes. Views of 13,000 ft peaks in Great Basin Nat’l Park. Countless broad desert valleys. A good portion on the Pony Express trail. Two thunderstorms and 100 degree heat sandwiched in the middle. Altogether, a great ride in a wonderful car. We are lucky to have them. I hope you all can get in a great ride and a few enthusiast rallies this summer!

Sounds like a blast. Like what you dream about when you first consider buying a 124.
My three brothers and I are trying to get to the place where we can do something similar.
Right now we have two cars that would make it and two that need lots of work, but we'll
get there. Thanks for sharing your experience.

This brings back wonderful memories! I did that road back in the early 1980's, in my '79 X1/9. What a great road! Trip started in Boston, went to California and back in that car. Never a single problem except for one tire blowout in Yellowstone.

Re: Driving the Loneliest Highway
Sounds like a nice weekend. My dog firmly believes that the back seat of a spider was specifically made for golden retrievers. I can't get near the car, let alone drive it without him being right at the door and ready to jump in. (in fact, a few times he has ignored the door and just jumped in.) I am sure, he was great company for your trip.
