transmission is done (as in, dead and gone)
so, what are all the cool kids doing, when their spider transmission won't shift into third? at all. running or not. rolling or not. i knew that the syncro for third was a little iffy, and i have only been driving a very little bit in the neighborhood until i get my defective upper a-arm replaced. but today, it stopped going into third.
i have searched the forum, but haven't found a very definitive answer. typically, can a local transmission shop do a rebuild on one of these?
it looks as if autoricambi has rebuilds for 1300, vick does for 1900, midwest offers a rebuild service, but does not list any for sale, mark allison doesn't mention them, and ravivhaik has a used one for 500.
what is a guy to do? (also, a good buddy of mine has a 1981 sitting in his garage with extensive front-end damage. i wonder if it is time to make him an offer on the car, part it out, and use his tranny while i do a rebuild of my own. so many options, but i just want to get it done and get back on the road.)

I believe VampyRepro in Orlando had a few sitting by his barn. He was talking of simplifying after his wifes surgery and may have had them hauled away if no one showed much interest in the parts he had. I believe his Spider is still listed on Craigs List.
Re: transmission is done (as in, dead and gone)
we rebuild them, but not offered on our site. I prefer not to have a blanket price-that creates a situation where some owners overpay and others underpay, depending what the problem is

Re: transmission is done (as in, dead and gone)
sounds good. thanks. only problem is that that leaves me without a car for what...? a few weeks? not optimal. would love to have you do the job, but i am really hoping to get one sent to me for immediate installation, then ship back a core.So Cal Mark wrote:we rebuild them, but not offered on our site. hell, does anyone need a website in exchange for a rebuilt tranny? not e-commerce; that would take a bunch more parts.

If your plan is to pull the engine with the tranny then you should plan on doing more than just the tranny.
While doing my tranny I also did:
Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, timing belt, tensioner belt bearing, supercharger belt, water pump, gear-reduction starter, oil cooler, oil cooler supply hoses, intake cam gear, seals for cams, auxiliary and crank gears, rad hoses, aluminum heat shield over the steering rack, and tranny tunnel insulation.
You obviously won't need to do all of these but most of them certainly makes sense to do at the same time. It will never be easier.

Re: transmission is done (as in, dead and gone)
If you want to do a bit of a road trip, I can lend or even you could purchase (love US $$$ at the moment)one from me if it works fine.
I have a couple of parts cars here with tranny's still in them. a 72 and 75?
From Seattle two choices....up to Bellingham then cut east a bit and come over at the Sumas crossing or come over Steven's pass , left onto hwy 97 and up to Summerland. About 5 hour drive?
Just a thought. Unfortunately I do not have the time to pull them myself. I have a hoist (and tools) I can put the car on though.

Re: transmission is done (as in, dead and gone)
why on earth would you pull the engine to remove the trans? That turns a 45 min job into a major task

well, that is quite the list of parts. as i have no supercharger or oil cooler, let's rule those out.Jimb wrote:If your plan is to pull the engine with the tranny then you should plan on doing more than just the tranny.

no, i figure i will do the clutch at the same time, and possibly get a lighter flywheel, but that is probably about it.

wow. i am suddenly very tempted to do a road trip. are the 72 and 75 transmissions the same as an 80? i would assume so.narfire wrote:If you want to do a bit of a road trip, I can lend or even you could purchase (love US $$$ at the moment)one from me if it works fine.
