Fuel Pump relay not supplying power to pump

Post by KenAdams »

Hey guys just wanted to see if I was missing something. I am not getting power to my fuel pump and tapping on the relay doesn't help. If I put 12V to the pump it works. I don't have power coming to the pump when the key is on. My bosch fuel pump relay is 0 332 204 125. Is there anything else that could be causing it like a ground. I have power at 2 points on the relay. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. 1971 Fiat Spider 124 with a mid to late 70s engine in it.

it depends on which 2 connections you have power. If you have power on 86 and not on 87, that is good. if you have power on both 86 and 87, you have a bad ground. If you have power on none of those, but on 85/86 then you have a switch problem. If you have power on one of each set, then your relay is bad. This is a common relay available at any parts house.

Not all relays are the same, Bosch are very good, some relays have resistors or better still a diode and some don't at all. Some are change over and some have a double 87 terminal (which I think this unit may be??)
I have discovered this the hard way, a new cheap relay was still active when it was suppose to be off (it was part if an ignition circuits so there are stray currents and EMF's), scratched my head for ages, rechecked wiring, till I put in an old Bosch relay and solved the problem.
Most will do the job, however testing the relay is easy, they usually have an image of the wiring on the relay itself follow azzrus suggestions or if you have a spare known working relay do a quick swap.
