FI exhaust manifold heat shield question

Post by KevAndAndi »

I saw that viotti600 sold a heat shield, and it reminded me that I wanted to get opinions on that piece of hardware. When we bought our '81 FI, I wasn't even aware that there was anything "missing", but it does in fact lack the shield.

What are thoughts on the necessity of the heat shield? How is it attached, exactly?

See photo, below, for details on attachment. It is simply held down with 3 nuts/washers on the 3 studs on the exhaust manifold.

Is it required? Well, the factory put it there for a reason. At risk of starting some crazy debate over it, I would say it was put there to protect the large air intake hose, distributor, and to some degree the AFM from unnecessary heat. Looks like plenty of guys are running without the shield, though, so I don't know how necessary it is.

If your vacuum modulator is in working condition it will shorten the life of the rubber baloon inside it. I have the shield on and despite that, the modulator still burns hot to the touch.
