I was met with a surprise the other day when cleaning up the grounds underneath Fiona

Not sure how this was missed in the past :? Dropped her off for welding repairs this morning 8) Be safe and double check things that you may not see everyday

Yup, I have one of those that needs attention Some PO had a repair done there and it looks to be a quickie very ugly job and needs to be redone properly. I will attend to it when I do the sway bar bushings and control arms this fall/winter

sorry to burst your bubble, but only proper way to repair that damage is to change the whole chasis leg

Whole chasis leg? As in past the crossmember to the bulkhead? If so, are you for real? Who would do this??? His intention is to drive this car long before next year. If he wants to cut his car in half he can choose to do so the next time it undergoes restoration. A reasonable repair has been done for the time being.

look, i've rstored several 70's and 80's fiats, 124 included. trust me when i say this, either do a proper job, or start looking for another car.

with that ammount of visible damage, i bet you that whole chasis leg is rotten from inside. even where it seems solid it's been half eaten away by rust, reducing it's load bearing capacity significantly. more holes will turn up on other parts of chasis leg in near future. one serious pothole and whole front end of the car will twist. if this car gets into an accident, chasis leg will fold like beer can.

repair that has been done is what we call "inspection special" . just so that car can pass annual techical inspection.

I did this very repair on mine just before our spring run. I cut out two (of the 4) sides of the box section and reinforced it from the inside and welded in new metal. I took a mirror and flashlight to look back into the box section and apart from surface rust all looked good.
The other side was solid, but the swaybar mount studs were stripped, so I cut a U with a grinder on the wheel well side so I can get in there and replace the studs.

Do you remember seeing any access holes (besides the c/m mount) where we can stick a wand in there for rustproofing purposes? Looks like a totaly sealed chamber.

The two times I've been towed the truck has had one of those carriages that slide under the wheels - so no need to chain up.

Those might be tie down holes when originally transported. On the newer cars that was what I was told they were for.
We used them for vehicle stabilization for auto extrication....

Mine is completely closed, but I think some Spiders had holes - on the engine compartment side and they have rubber plugs in them. But I may be thinking of a Coupe.

When they put mine on a flat bed the driver assured me he would not use the weep holes or unit body drains to hook on to so he would not compromise them. He used straps looped over the control arms with no hooks touching the car to load it and then used webbed hold downs over the tires to tie it down. The driver was very respectful of the Spider and treated her very gently.
