Plus one to Arik
These cars were never meant or designed for winter driving. It's the little spaces, cracks, nooks and crannies that you won't reach with a brush or spray gun that will be it's ultimate demise. Sure, you can drive the Spider this winter no problem, but I can guarantee that you will be parting the poor thing out within 5 years.
I live in Nova Scotia where we have winter and road salt in abundance. We see 3 year old vehicles (including mine!) that are showing rust already, not good.
Seriously, have you checked out car sharing, bus routes, neighbours, ANYTHING to keep this poor spider out of crap?
I'm just putting my two kids through secondary education so money's tight. We live rurally, we can't afford an extra car but it's amazing how resourceful my family is. We all get where we need to go, it's just a question of forward planning. Good luck!
My two cents ain't worth what it used to be

Thanks for all the responses.
So it seems that salt and rust are the real problem. By undercoating I meant using something like POR15. What if I coated the underneath with POR15, would it still rust quickly? I don't want my car to rust, that would be a huge shame. If it will rust really badly even with POR15 I will then sell it, since sadly the two car option isn't possible for me and I want the car to last.
You would need to get specialized spray equipment to rustproof every cavity and inside every rolled or folded edge which would require drilling access holes that would need plugs installed in them afterwards. A shop with a rust proofing fogger or dip tank would be better but those are expensive processes if you can find someone equipped to do them and require stripping the car completely to the bare carcass and removing all oil, wax, grease, paint and sealant before it can be done correctly.

Wow. A real case of "if you love her, let her go."

Here's hoping the day soon comes when you can afford to have a Spider as a pleasure driver.
