Should I just buy a new @#@#$@#$ transmission?

Post by scubachris »

On my third clutch cable and it feels like it is slipping again and top of that I am popping out of reverse. The mechanics have replaced a fork and through out bearing and since then, I have popped a clutch cable. After I brought it back to have it replaced, the car is popping out of reverse. To be honest, I don't think they put it together right and I am leery on bringing it back to them.

Question:

1) Should I send my transmission off to a specialist and any recommendations?

2) Should I just buy a rebuilt transmission from AutoRacambi?

3) Should I start drinking heavily?

Thanks

The clutch cable and slippage are not tranny issues but clutch issues. A tranny that was just repaired and popping out of reverse says your rebuilder didn't do a thorough job. If the job isn't too old, they should stand behind their work.

But that is the thing. When I bought the car it came with a clutch, the mechanics said it didn't need it. So are the mechanics wrong or is it indicative of something else?

You said 'slipping again'? Was it slipping before? If so, it did need a clutch.

Most likely that is an internal problem in the transmission, but the good news is that reverse is in the rear of the case, so if everything else is working then only the rear case needs to come off. For nearly any other problem the transmission needs to come completely apart.

Thanks vandor. I keep debating if I am going to take it back to these guys. I don't think they really understand Fiat transmissions. It would seem to me a transmission is a transmission. I've had them work on normal cars with no problem.

Edit: should I send it to a specialist mechanic?

... or come to Houston and we'll have a look at it - plenty of us here.

In Houston you've got Orion that I think have a pretty good reputation. There's also a 'vintage' Fiat master mechanic working nearby that sptcoupe knows.

It would be fun to meet people fellow crazy people and I would have a place to stay but I would hate to bother people to help me. On the other hand I could get some hands on advice on how to reinstall a carbon filter.

Call Csaba and Ramzi directly would be my recommendation....

.... And if you ping Mike Rutenberg at TexasFLU then you could ask for a tech session on it....

.... And if you turned up at my door I'd spend a few hrs looking at it - with no promise of success ;)
