Proposed discussion area

A proposal.

The pending onslaught of owner complaints and troubleshooting for the new FIAT MX-5 Spider will need an easily identifiable location. I propose a new discussion area for them.

Surely, Brad, you're not thinking that new Spider owners are going to face the same kinds of issues we "originals" have faced for all these years.

I believe FIAT has the lowest quality rating of all new cars. Potential is high, people.

you want to complain about a car that isn't on the market yet?

That may be - but Mazda's ratings are among the highest.

The pending onslaught of owner complaints and troubleshooting...
Hey, if we set our expectations low enough there is no way we will be disappointed

But on a more serious note Brad has a point - a discussion area for the new Spider probably isn't a bad idea.

I agree. and it is not like there should immediately be any huge issues (I would hope), but there will obviously be a huge amount of talk about accessories, power-up bolt-ons, and all the regular car forum stuff. it would make sense to either create a second forum or specify that this one is only for the previous, Italian-made spiders.

Have owned several Mazdas and each one has been a great driving car. If the chassis and suspension is based on the MX-5 this should be an entertaining little car. As for the Italian bits and reliability... it is a weekend toy so even if it is quirky I am used to dealing with quirky garage toys.

I am glad we will have a shot at another Italian roadster that doesn't require a second mortgage!

There should also be a separate area for b!tching about how the new Spider is nothing but a Miata dressed in Italian clothing, how it should have been designed by Pininfarina, and how it doesn't incorporate enough design cues from the original. People would have a place to get all riled up each time a bad Photoshop rendering appears showing what the car might look like. :)

(I admit I have given in to these impulses myself.)

Note to Mark - I merely suggest there will be complaints. I'm refer to the launch of the 500 as an example. We had to endure a bunch of people talking about what amounted to buying a new car. Yawn. "Mine's an ABARTH." Wait for it...yaaaawwwwwnnnn.. There are forums for these things, but a gear head forum that talks about the now ancient, and awesome, classic cars? Where is the home mechanic in the MX5pyder? Installing a chrome shift knob (which likely voids the entire car warranty).

And I really do think we need to maintain a sense of humor about these things. The reason we're all here is an orphan car. Laughable quality control, dealer network, parts availability. Somehow what unified all of the FIAT owners in America - the lack of FIAT itself - has turned into this desire to own these things anew. I just think its kind of strange, but then again, I never loved the brand, I love the cars. Had it been made by Peugeot I guess I'd be writing about the Peugeot 124 Spider.

You're right, Brad - among my hobbies are my Spider and my golf game. Without a deep sense of humility and a tremendous sense of humor, I'd likely have committed hair-kari after several of my golf games or the several Spider drives that have ended on the back of a tow truck.

About 10 years ago I looked at 911s... And though to myself, "self you're too stuck in your ways to learn a new car". A few years later Csaba and I decided to start this Auto Ricambi thing. Much to both our suprise, there are a lot of folks out there who simply just like the Spider... And even more suprising is the number who enjoy the company of other like minded individuals.

I don't love Fiat the brand.... I just like my 124's. As to the new Spider. Odds are, not many of those people will land here. So i personally dont think its much of an issue... But if there is a segregated area... We'll be ther too I'm sure.
