Engine Removal
I'm almost ready to remove the engine and transmission, as a unit. I see where some have raised only the front end of the car, others have raised only the rear end, and others have raised the entire car (like Denise has done.) I've never pulled the engine and transmission, but it looks like raising the rear end fairly high will be sufficient, as it will provide additional clearance for the transmission as it pivots downward. Maybe I'm missing something. I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts on why they did it their particular way.

Re: Engine Removal
I just did it an raised the whole car, front and back to make sure I could maintain enough angle for the oil pan to clear the radiator support crossbeam. BUT, you better make sure your cherry picker can overcome the added height. Also noticed it would have been a lot easier had I also removed the center steering link as the tranny pan wants to hang up there. I'll probably pull it out before putting the assembly back.

Re: Engine Removal
I lifted my car, the tires were about 4 inches off the floor. I used a worm gear leveler on the hoist and a heavy duty nylon rope supporting the transmission. I was able to do this by myself by taking my time and adjusting the angle using the worm gear.
You can get the leveler at harbor freight....was cheap

Re: Engine Removal
Thanks guys. It looks like I'll be raising the whole car a bit. I plan to remove the center link since I'm replacing all the steering linkages anyway.
Pat, I've looked through your photos and plan to look them over closer in the coming days. Lots of good information there.
It looks like you rebuilt your engine. I can't decide if I want to go quite that far. It was running good when I started the disassembly process. I made the mistake of not checking the compression before I started. I'm going to replace all the seals, clean it up, and paint it.
Hopefully I can get the engine and transmission pulled next weekend.

Re: Engine Removal
I have never raised the car and had enough clearance. I usually remove the shift lever, tho.

Re: Engine Removal
Glad to help...please note that the engine lift I used has the lift boom extended, this allows you to get the steep angle. I also think I lowered the car after the engine was lifted to provide more room to go over the front of the car.dmg36054 wrote:Thanks guys. It looks like I'll be raising the whole car a bit.

good luck with your engine work, they are pretty easy to work on and the parts are readily available thru the great collection of vendors on this site. Keep the pictures coming!

Re: Engine Removal
Good to hear from you Csaba. I already have a bunch of your parts ready to install. I have to remove the driveshaft and disconnect the clutch cable, then I should be ready. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Re: Engine Removal
I used a towable hoist. I jacked up the front to gain access underneath. During the pull, I needed to lower the front off the jack stands to gain clearance above the car. Better to have a helper IMO.
