Hello all
I have a 1982 2000 FI that had a major engine rebuild including:
Oversized pistons
Marks Street cams (a bit hot)
Shaped input ports
Shaped chambers
Oversized valves
Marks snake header
New clutch
Balanced lightened flywheel
Racing radiator
Cal cert cat
Hush muffler
So I recently had the timing done with the hopes that it might get me thru California smog requirements, well no dice.
The areas I failed were all at idle 919 RPM
FAIL HC(ppm) 256 vs 120 max
FAIl CO (%). 2.81 vs 1.50 max
I also pulled the air intake manifold/filter and simply added an aluminum air intake to mass flow sensor with K&N? Air filter at end car also had new o2 sensor installed on header.
Tha car passes at 2500 RPM no problem, it's idle that fails it, I could pull the header replace old exhaust manifold and connect to exhaust and put old air intake system back on?????? Oh it has a new cal cert cat on it
any suggestion within reason greatly appreciated thanks mike

Yes I'm aware, many mods to expect it to pass stringent cal emissions

Would like to sell........

the fuel mixture is too rich, adjust it leaner and that will drop the HC as long as you don't go too lean. Retard the timing the maximum amount which is 3 degrees. If you have a vacuum advance that works, plug the hose and reconnect it to the dist. Set the idle speed to the maximum allowed

Thanks much mark will make those adjustments, not sure if this makes a diff but the air filter looks rather small...........does "size matter" in this case?

not at the rpm the smog check occurs at. If you're not sure about setting the fuel mixture, connect a voltmeter + lead to the O2 sensor wire. Set the mixture to get .450 volts while holding the rpm at 2000

Also, there is a mixture adjustment screw in the Airflow Meter: looking down on the top there is an access hole that is (or was) plugged; remove the plug and you will be able to turn a screw that leans out the mixture somewhat.
