It's rebuild time. That's a sure fire sign. It will only get worse.
The thing is, it will be just as much work to take the tranny out and disassemble simply to repair the one gear as it is to do a thorough rebuild. The cost of course is more to do the complete job, but it does not make sense to not do it at the same time.

Is it a difficult task to rebuild the transmission and are the parts readily available?

Or would the better option be to source a used transmission and take my chances?

And how about the removal and reinstall of it, is it a task that I can do alone on jack stands while using a jack?

If I were pulling one I'd rebuild it and not bother with a used one. If you can remain organized and clean, and have a workspace that you can leave the thing open and disassembled for a few days while you order parts and work on it, you're fine. If you work outside in the swamp...don't do it.

I'm no tranny expert but through experience have found the main reason for popping out of gear is worn shift forks. Of course, everytime it pops out, you are doing internal damage.

And, frequently the shift forks get worn because the driver rests their hand on the gearshift while driving.

Where can I find a transmission repair manual and parts sheet for a 1982 Fiat Spider?

Or is there a post on how to do it?

I'm in the middle of one now and using the Brooklands Fiat repair manual. It's very good, photos and step by step. There is a repair book available but it's the same procedure and I don't find it as helpful. Parts are available from several vendors - search the forum.
I would say if you think you'ld enjoy doing it, do it - If not, pay someone else but I wouldn't put in a used gearbox unless you're a very lucky person.

I have an electronic copy of the Fiat transmission manual. It's not great, but it's a start. PM me your email address and I'll send it over.

I'm in the same boat with second gear. Any specific tools I need to get?

Snap ring pliers, impact screwdriver, large sockets - 22 and 28 mm I think, gear pullers might come in handy, access to hydraulic press.

Definitely snap ring pliers and gear pullers. The cheap Harbor Freight ones work fine. Pay very close attention when you pull the little detent dowels out as to their order. Otherwise the Fiat manual is fine. Also take plenty of disassembly pictures as you remove parts and lay them out in order on a shop towel. Helps with the assembly memory phase if you have to wait a couple of days in between. I'd do both sliders and shift forks as well as syncros and springs all around.

I recommend a high quality snap ring plier. I've used both and the high quality one use make life easier.
