Second clutch cable replacement

Post by scubachris »

Sorry if this isn't the right forum but I need some help.

I have 79 Spider CS2 and I just popped the second clutch cable. Had the original one replaced along with the throw out bearing replaced not two months ago. When I first got it back, it was fine but I noticed over time I was having trouble getting into 1st and reverse. I was on my way to the shop to get it checked out when I felt the clutch cable go out. Not quite to the floor but close enough to were I couldn't get it into any gear. Should I have him reinspect the transmission? What could be causing this?

Edit:
Just to add in, it felt fine when I got it back the first and second time. The mechanic had to make adjustments but it feels like the cable comes out of adjustment after driving it.

Thanks,
Chris

PS Still love my car
PPS If I have made any spelling or grammar mistakes, I blame my GF cat who loves me even though I am allergic to it. She is in my face as soon as I sit down.

if the fork at the top of the pedal is bent or cracked it will cause the cable to fail pretty quickly. But, since your pedal still has some resistance to it I'd inspect the firewall for cracks

What can I do to fix the firewall?

if the firewall is cracked you can reinforce it with a plate, otherwise you need to remove the brake booster and anything else in the way to weld and reinforce

also check your ground strap. Make sure you have a good engine ground, that is the second leading cause of premature clutch cable failures. The engine (starter) attempts to ground through the clutch cable, which cannot handle the amperage!

Yeah, I have nothing wrong with my firewall and it was frayed right where it meets the peddle so this might be it
