smog pump removal

my 1979 spider has a smog pump, can i remove this from the car without any ill effects on the performance of the car?

Yes; in fact, your performance will improve. You have to remove the pump and the reed valves in the head, and block the holes off with short bolts. Any holes left that bring air into the head or carburetor will need to be blocked.

You can use oil drain plugs available at auto parts stores to block off the ports in the head.

Same thing happened to me last weekend. The pump started to make funny noises so after reading this I decided to remove the pump and all the appliances attached to it, plugged all the holes and voila all is fine and she runs like a charm.
