Tune up time

Post by Lkcast »

Morning all, so the weather has finally turned and i have taken Olive out of her shell. i did notice that i have 2 oil spots where she sat this winter. both fit where the oil pan and the transmission would have been so i am going to check the fluids and perhaps replace the pan gaskets for both. what i really need is a manual (digital) that have some excellent visuals. i am able to read just fine thanks, Haha, but i find i am a visual learner. the present copies i have are not as sharp as i would appreciate. thanks for the help and no it is not broken so i cant send it out it just needs a little TLC. but thanks for the offers to take it off my hands. 1981 spider 5 speed manual trans fuel injection. again thanks for the assist.

If they're minor leaks, you may be better off living with them.

I say this from experience. The pan gasket is cork and will probably take some scraping. That is after, you raise the engine high enough above the crossmember to remove the pan.

Try tightening the pan bolts first.

Leak may be from front crank seal. Very involved. I replaced mine but it still leaks a bit. Frustrating!

unless the crankcase is overfilled, the pan gasket won't leak while sitting as the oil level is below the top edge of the pan

thanks for the thought and suggestions. but i think i would like to change the transmission oil, or is that not advised? i am not sure when it was last checked and i am trying to do as little as possible to disturb the fine equilibrium it is now balanced on. does any know what exactly the tools needed to remove the drain pug and the fill plug? if some one has a better plan i am all ears. thanks again for all the input.

I can give you instructions for days, but if the car is at some happy spot...why do it? It is an old car, and unless you've got a real nasty leak then put some cardboard under the car.

If you must then just tighten things: the oil pan, just tighten the bolts you can reach around the crossmember - and don't tighten too much, they don't need much. The transmission, do the same thing.
