I still need to decide on cams. Dual downdraft DCNF 42s and header, 4mm dome pistons; what to do, what to do?

Gack. Red pulleys... I was once young and painted an engine crazy colors, and I never did it again. Something about the factory look was always more appealing; but then again I never liked dragsters or chromed up cars in the first place.
Adjustable cam wheels is your "what to do" because you may find a few degrees in one direction or the other gives you some more grunt with those 42s. And if you use anything but stock cams you need the adjustable wheels anyway.

Not painted red, adonized and not bright red. And that is the crank pulley and the two ADJUSTABLE cam wheels. I promise I won't go overboard. Just the pulleys to brighten it up a little (I plan on running without the belt cover). I know you are a purist Brad but what's the point if I can't make it a little bit my own? I've been confused with being a purist...I'm probably more a purist than most, but I'm not going to be silly about things. I don't think the cars were made to be driven with the hoods up.

So Brad, I must have missed those posts of yours where you advocated a non-original cosmetic change on the parts of the car that are visible while driving? Don't get me wrong, I respect your opinion or I wouldn't seek it. There is nothing wrong with preferring the cars original, but the main reason I have sort of settled on playing with Spiders after owning over a 100 cars in my lifetime is exactly because they are cheap and plentiful and that leaves me free to modify them as I please.bradartigue wrote:I've been confused with being a purist...I'm probably more a purist than most, but I'm not going to be silly about things. I went the full 6 year nut and bolt restoration route once on a 70 E-type and won a National award but my days of worrying about the plating on a bolt hidden from sight are long over. I just want to make it what I want and enjoy it.
BTW, by your own argument it shouldn't matter if I paint the entire engine bay day glow orange, ain't gonna see it while driving anyway!
All that said, I would absolutely stick to as original as I could if I had an early chrome bumper car. The purity of design always seems to fade after the first few years of production; think Miata, E-type, Z cars, and our own Spiders. Of course a lots of that has to do with our beloved DOTs interference. For some reason car models sold in American seem to follow the basic pattern of their owners; they get fat and lazy with age.
