Today, I decided to take my Spider to work... Work is a 25 mile drive (each way), with about 5 miles of that in city traffic (for those that know Tempe, AZ, I take Mill Ave from 60 to basically Rio Salado..) And its 102 outside... Top down, no AC.. Whee! Why? I was supposed to meet up with a coworker that has a Delorean, but he ended up in a meeting and I missed him.. Ah well..
Anyways.. I have a stock 79 cooling system.. So an OEM rad, fan, and 3 way T stat... Engine is basically stock, with a carb upgrade.
My temps only briefly went over 190 in the city traffic, and on the highway, I was actually significantly lower than 190... This is the little cooling system that could... I have verified the temps I get in the past with an IT temp gun, so I don't think it because my gauge reads low.. I just think that its cooling that well..
My cooling system test....

Agreed! When they're working right, the cooling system is incredibly efficient.

John, my cooling system is entirely stock. For the past 2 years, i have taken the car out weekly, even deep into the triple digits. My car runs at normal temps and only goes slightly higher if i am in heavy traffic and the fan is running like crazy. The stock system can definitely handle the heat.

I agree, once the stock cooling system is sorted, it works very well. Mine never causes trouble anymore.
