fuel pump

Post by sierraspider »

My 82 just died a few blocks from my house. Thought I was out of gas, not the problem. Checked power to pump with ignition on (12v) good I assume. Pulled pump hooked up direct to battery- no go (It's a cheapo 3 yrs old). Anything else I should check before shelling out for pump.

If you supplied power and ground to the pump, it should run. If the AFM is adjusted properly, you won't have power to the pump with the key on/engine off. It has to be cranking fast enough to open the flap in the AFM for the pump to get power

AFM is new- Again I removed the pump and hooked it up to a battery and it's not spinning at all. No flow at regulator.
Still slightly confused.

sounds like a bad pump. i find them to go south if they don't get regular use. they can also be subject to failure if you are passing debris from the tank through the pump to the fuel filter.

My '81's fuel pump started making funny sounds as soon as I got the car home after buying it late last year. Besides replacing the pump (appeared to be original Bosch) with a new one (Facet, fairly quiet), I retrofitted a fuel strainer between the tank and the pump. Here are some helpful links:

Pump was crap . I had pulled tank and refurbed and new fuel filter not long ago. Got 3 yrs for $18,( cheap pump) so I guess it wasn't that bad. Thanks again to everyone.
