Re-build

Post by zachmac »

So I've started the engine tear down, some good some bad. The head will be off to AR Monday for a complete rework; big valves, isky springs, porting, new guides and seals.

Haven't pulled the block yet but looks like I am in for a SECOND bore. The pistons in the car are flat to recessed like stock compression but are stamped "84.4-67188" on top so I suspect that means it is already the first size overbore? Hopefully just the next step (.6) will give me a clean straight set of cylinders. Then I can go with some 9.8 CR domed units.

I will be listing the complete ignition set up in the for sale section shortly. It is a Marelli breaker-less distributor with a Crane Fireball ignition module and a Bosch coil on a stock heat sink. Anyone need one it is in gre6ta shape and ran fine.

Wiggly pistons?

Post by zachmac »

So, this seems not quite right. I was cleaning up the piston tops (still in engine in car with head off) and noticed I can wiggle the pistons side to side pretty easily with just my thumbs! Does that sound right? Remember this car sat for four years without even cranking so maybe all the rings are just stuck to the pistons? The rebuild is on part to fix the oil burning / blow by. If pistons and rings are seated correctly is it normal to be able to move them around in the bore side to side with just finger pressure?

Once I get the block plucked out and dis-assemble I'll know for sure about the rings but seems strange.

No, plus as a coworker reminded me today, also means a lot of play in the crank. I'll be double checking the thrust washer and all journals as well. :D

That motor probably had some wicked piston slap. You'll likely be going with oversized pistons and the block will need to be machined. Keep this all in mind.

have you thought about a used short block with fewer miles and re-building that? I like the idea of sourcing another engine, put it on a stand and re-build while still driving your car.

Well that WAS certainly an option but, I think I might be a little committed to rebuilding mine:
