Will this Marelli Electronic Ignition work on my spider

Post by kmoses »

I have been given a NOS Magneti Marelli electronic ignition that does not have vacuum advance. The numbers on the base of the distributor are SM801AX -- 802R2 802P2 9J. My engine is 2.0L w/ 1800 head, intake and 32 ADFA carb. My question is will this work on my engine and if so, is the timing set the same as stock?

I've got the same distributor on my engine, except it ends in 3K, not 9J. I don't recall seeing a VA on a Fiat dizzie, it must be a Yank thing. I run mine at 10deg static, I did try 15deg when I fitted the IDFs, head and cams, but it tended to ping a bit, so I backed it off.

I found the factory invoice tucked in the box (new in 1990) and orderd from Bayless, Inc. in GA. now Midwest-Bayless in OH..
Called and spoke with Matt and he said set the base timing at 12-15 deg. BTDC and at 3500 RPM it should be 30 deg. max. and that these are NLA. Thanks for letting me know what your setup is.
