Raleigh Area Help

Post by cnavarre »

Last fall she blew her head gasket. Replaced the head gasket, machined the head and adjusted the values. She won't run. I can get her to fire and run rough but nothing close enough to start the final timing adjustment. I am willing to pay for a course in Spider101 if there is an expert in the area who is willing to come by and help me understand what I am doing wrong. She wants to run.

A very common problem in re assembling is to get the exhaust and intake cam gears swapped. The gear with the "A" in the face of it is the intake.

Thanks...she won't run enough to get to the timing light.

I have enough photos from before that I believe the intake and exhaust are correct but there is no "A" on either gear. That actually would have made sense.

If you do a forum search, you should be able to find a photo showing the cams, looking from the front. I can't remember which, but the cam timing mark leads the dowel pin on one, and lags the dowel pin on the other. Even if the cams are swapped, it should run, just not well. When the cams are lined up with the pointers, crank at TDC, the ignition fires on number 4. If you have all that set up, fuel reaching the cylinders and spark at the plugs, it should run. Try rotating the dizzie a few degrees in either direction to see if you can can get a bit more than just occasional firing.
