Window crank handels on power window car

Post by Mattt123 »

Hi Gang.
Does anyone know if I can add window crank handles to my 81 spider. It came with power windows
but they can be fussy. Is there any problem with popping off the little disc that sits where the handle would
normally go and just adding a crank? Does the crank just slide in or is it necessary to take the panel off the door for some reason?

Thanks
ClarkTheShark

They actualy came from the factory with an emergency window handle crank i believe. autoricambi sells them.

Actually, they accidentally sent me one on an order a few years back. Thought about keepin' it.

You can convert to manual windows by simply replacing the power window regulators with manual ones.

For what it's worth...

My car came with manual windows but everything is already there to convert the car over to power windows. Even the relays and fuses. All you need are two switches and two motors. As far as I know.

To me power windows on a car where you can reach the window crank from the driver's seat and roll them up or down without straining is pointless. On my 68 Ford Fairlane 2 door hardtop which has 4 windows, it might be great.

I've always had issues trying to slide my stereo back into the center console if I have to take it out for some reason. It kept pulling the courtsey light, hazzard switch and cigarrette lighter connectors out. Maybe not all three but one or two. Due to the mess of wiring behind it.

So I started tracing down all these wires with the wiring diagram. The majority of that mess went to the power window switches.

Once you get rid of all that clutter you would be surprised how much easier it is to get the center console back in place (or slide the radio back in).

Also you can now use the first fuse in the fusebox for the fuel pump (if fuel injected). Just unhook the wires going to the 1st fuse. Tape up the top wire (red maybe) but I think when you remove all the wiring it has no power going to it.

Find the in-line fuse to the fuel pump up underneath the dash and connect these two wires where the power window fuse was orignally. They are long enough to reach.

That plastic in-line fuse holder will eventually melt (sooner or later) and almost leave you stranded! Which happened to me back in 2000 going to FFO.
