Water Jacket Cover Plate on back of block

Post by kmoses »

I just pulled the water jacket cover plate located on the back of the block. The plate is very pitted and rusty. I have access to some very thin .026" 316ss sheet and am going to sandwich this between the block and the heave steel plate. Other than a disimilar rate of thermal expansion (that is minimal at these temps.) between the stainless and steel cover plate, shouldn't this take care of my rusty plate problem forever?

you could be introducing some galvanic corrosion risk with 2 dissimilar metals.

If the gasket mating surface of the plate is not corroded, treat the existing corrosion with an inhibitor then paint the plate. POR-15 would be ideal, but it's a pain to work with.

I thought about using POR-15 (used it for years and love it) but was worried that if for some reason it let go of the plate, it could block a water passage and overheat the engine.

If the coolant is replaced regularly corrosion should be minimal from this point on. That plate is very thick, it would have to be very badly corroded before I'd worry about it.
