You're probably right. I tend to think its just a case of the pump not keeping up with the demand, too low a pressure to begin with. Might look into an electric conversion, would make starting so much easier too!

How difficult was installing the electric pump? My mechanical one just decided to take a break from running on me, and I've been thinking of doing this.. And blocking off the old section, I just am curious if there is anything I need to expect during and afterwards installing

FIAT dealer did mine in 1982 under warranty. All they did was disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump then connect them together. The mechanical fuel pump is still there just by-passed. He then installed the new one in the trunk.

If it is going to be wired to run when the ignition is on, put in an inertial shutoff switch, to stop fuel flow in the event of a collision.
