Rusty Jones

Post by nalle »

I have a "rusty jones" sticer in my car.
As I have understod right rusty jone was somekind of rustprotection maker in US.

Do you have any idea what kind of rust protection they did make?
Did they cover the bottom of the car with rustprotection stuff (like tectyl bodysafe)
http://www.valvolineeurope.com/english/ ... ory=tectyl
and did they use inside of the carparts something (like tectyl ML)
http://www.valvolineeurope.com/english/ ... ory=tectyl

Reason for the question is that my cars bottom is covered with black stuff (like body safe)
and I like'd to know is it "original stuff" or is it propably coverd when the car came back to europe.

If it is "original" then I can be sure that there is no weldings in my car.

Mine, too, was undercoated. This is no sticker. I don't know any of the details.

I can tell you it was done after final assembly because there was overspray on the driveshaft.

HEY!!!!
Rusty looks like I've seen him before.
Nice pics Jay.

Rusty Jones was a rustproofing company that was around in the late seventies to the mid eighties. I used to sell Honda's in 1980. Our after market sales people used to sell that stuff. When I purchased my 1980 Honda Civic GL I had that option installed. It was well worth it because my Honda never rusted.
When I purchased my 1980 it came with all the original paperwork (Looks just like Jays). Rusty Jones was installed on that spider and it had no rust. Didn't help during the crash but that's another story.
Leave it on your spider.

FIATs had an undercoating, but any self-respecting car dealer had to add something to the deal, so if you got the Rusty Jones treatment then you had double-coating. If applied correctly the stuff works. The problem with any "rust proofing" product is how the dealer installed on; when they failed (and trapped in moisture) it was often worse than not applying it.

thank you for the answers.
And those photos were really good.
Now I'm happy, the bottom coat is "original", not factory made but 1st. owner made.

Next I will use Tectyl ML for the inside body parts and also to the bottom.
I just spry it over the body coating
ML is not very durable, but it will go to all holes and cracks if there is any.
