Sport coupe AC - Mechanical fuel pump cracked

Post by Juel72 »

Hi,

I discovered a few drops of engine oil on the garage floor under my newly totally rebuild Sport Coupe. It is a 1400cc from 1969 AC model.

I was surprises to see what caused the problem. The fuel pump was destroyed, the lower part of the pump was cracked.
The "ears" for the bolt just disintegrated when I removed the pump. The sides of the housing is also cracked in more than one place.

The pump part is still OK and functioning.

I have ordered a new pump, but I would like to know how this can happen. To avoid future problems.
Is it just a case of bad quality parts or did I make a mistake when mounting the pump.

The pump was mounted with the bakelite spacer and all gaskets.

Any suggestions ?

B/R
Juel.

perhaps the wrong pump was supplied in the first place?......this was a new pump? correct?

i once replaced a Jeep water pump. local parts store supplied pump. long story short, they had wrong pump in box. On this particular jeep, the pump rotation changed from clock wise to counter clock wise, when they went from VEE belt to serpentine belt ...........everything bolted up, but it was wrong part from the start....

Hi Juel,

I too have had that failure, the casting cracks and leaks oil. Mine was old so I did not think much about it, was yours new? Maybe go easy on tightening those mounting nuts. Post some photos, lots of 124 coupe fans here!
