I went and removed the snap ring that holds the thrust washer on the transmission input shaft. Don't ask why...

Is there a trick to getting the snap ring back on?

While we're at it, when I pulled the bellhousing off the spring washer there dropped out, and i didn't see which way it had been facing. Does the cup side go towards the transmission, or towards the bellhousing? I do see some indication that the cup faces the transmission.

I did read in another thread about scribing where the input shaft seal sits so that I don't drive it in too far.

I think you got your nomenclature wrong. The thrust ring is not held by a snapring, it simply sandwiches between the bellhousing and and the input shaft bearing.
The input shaft bearing has a snapring on it to keep it from sliding inside the tranny. Is this what you removed? If so, you should be able to insert one side and then work it around.

Thanks FoCoDave, the videos answer all of my questions. I always forget about that IAP resource. Hope you have been driving yours in this summer weather we've been having!

Csaba, I did remove the circlip that retains the smaller thrust washer in front of the transmission input shaft bearing... that mistake will cost me some time since it looks like a big pain to replace. I also lost track of the larger thrust washer when I removed the bell housing so I didn't know which way it faced, but the IAP video answers the directional question.

Manuals all refer to a special tool A.70350 to compress the thrust washer while installing the circlip on the input shaft, but none have photos. Does anybody know what this tool looks like? I might be able to rig up something with a bar and a puller-type screw then work around the circumference. Not prepared to use the hammer method in the video just yet!

Ooooh, you mean the thrust washer that keeps the bearing on the shaft. You do not need a special tool. Put the end of a punch in one of the holes, and with a hammer tap it so it goes into the groove. Then work it all the way around into the groove. When done make sure the end you started on is still all the way in,

I managed to get it in with some clamps and levers, but also managed to end up with a circlip that is sprung; both ends won't stay in the groove at the same time. Ramzi shipped a replacement yesterday! So I'll try your punch technique when it arrives. While I'm waiting I can rebuild the driveshaft.

Man, that was slick! 30 seconds and done. Thanks, Csaba. :D The old one is badly sprung and stays open an extra 3/16" at the tips when out. Glad I replaced it.

While I didn't end up needing the special tool, I did find a used one for sale at http://www.penybonttools.com

I don't recall if they had any other special fiat tools.
