Gearbox noise when in neutral.

Post by kmoses »

The '79 I purchased has a wine in the gearbox when it is in neutral. If the clutch is pressed the wine goes away. It has a freshly rebuilt gearbox (purchased from AR by the previous owner), new clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, and pilot bearing. When I was pulling the gearbox, I noticed that there was no clutch fork boot or clutch fork return spring. Is it possible that without a clutch return spring, the release bearing was touching the clutch enough to start singing?

if it whines in neutral, it could be a bearing on the counter shaft or the needle bearing inbetween the input and main shaft

Is there any way to test this out of the car?
