2000cc Head swap & timing belt length

Post by kmoses »

The '79 2.0L (1995cc) timing belt has 148 teeth and the '78 1.8L (1756cc) timing belt has 146 teeth. If I put a '78 1756cc head on the '79 2.0L block, what belt do I use? Is the difference in the cam box height, timing pulley size, or ???

Block height.

The 1756 has a shorter block and stroke. You should still use a 1995 timing belt. If the head has been shaved, you may need to think about a set of adjustable timing gears to get to optimal timing for performance.

To add a bit more:

All of the heads are the same height. The 1592, 1796, and 1995 blocks are all different heights. For these engines block determines belt length.

Hm, no, the two 1600s and the 1756 take the same belt. The 1438 is shorter, and does take a shorter belt.

You are correct. 1438 is different from 1592/1608/1756 and both are different from each other and 1995. Sorry, brain melt.

Re: 2000cc Head swap to 1800 how much to mill?

Post by buckspet »

I'm thinking of swapping the cylinder head on my 79 2000l with a 1800 head..while at it I was thinking of having the head milled to further increase the miserable original compression. How much to mill? is 10-1 ratio feasible? what other things need to be addressed with this type of modification...will use a 1800 single plain and a 34ADF carb

You'll have a hard time getting 10:1 by shaving the head. Fiat mostly altered compression with pistons.

79 runs strong for a smogger..so I really don't want to do the bottom end, just trying the easy stuff for now. so i'm wondering how much is safe to shave & what would the approximate compression be...anybody have experience doing this?

Well it turns out I can't locate my 1800 head...put it in storage 30 years ago and moved my toys twice in that time...But I did find a nice fuel inj cylinder head coplete,a 1800 intake manifold, and a FI exhaust manifold with the O2 sensor still on it. Now I need some info about milling the head, new valve spring suggestions and a 34ADF carb. Hopefully I can get by with as little $ as possible. ..either a hard to find used 34ADF or a knock off version if and only if our members can suggest it from actual use. Also valve spring suggestions, manufacturer recommendations. THANKS FOR ALL THE VALUABLE INFORMATION FROM THE BEST FORUM MEMBERS EVER
