Idle and lack of power solved-AFM
Idle and lack of power solved-AFM
Been off the post for a while. Sometimes life gets in the way of the spider.(How does this happen?) For a while going through lousy idle and lack of power issues. diagnosed a sticky AFM and tried sanding fix, but didn't work. Finally, took my afm to FIC (Fuel Injection Corp) in Tracy, Ca.(I'm an hour from there) Robert and his folks did an amazing job rebuilding (new flap and refurbed electronics, completely cleaned, looks new) my afm for very reasonable $.The car has never run better!!! Absolutely purrs. These guys also rebuild injectors and pretty much anything fuel injection, so if you have a squirted spider I highly recommend these folks. I mentioned the forum and he said he'd help out, if you just give it a mention. Their # is 800 729 7118. I rarely give recommendations but in this case I can heartily refer them.

The key component of the AFM is the thick film resistor ceramic, that the slider travels on. What did they do with that part? Did they replace it?

They replaced it. I toured their workshop and they have new and nos parts up the ying yang. The Bosch "tronic" stuff was used on many vehicles and it was explained by the tech there that many electronic parts are interchangeable, the biggest difference is in size (diamter) of chamber.

They went completely through mine for $200. (+ship). Mine had a bent flap and crap electronics. (It had been opened up by PO). Robert said he'd work with the forum folks, so ring him up and get a quote. They warranty they're work.

Re: Idle and lack of power solved-AFM
I have been doing quite a bit of troubleshooting and the only major thing that remains to be eliminated as a source of my remaining problems is the AFM. I have not yet cracked it open, but I know that (a) the door is bent outward a little; (b) the door sticks a little; (c) one of the pairs of contacts at the ECU connector yields a resistance value right at the upper bound of spec; (d) as the car has over 100,000 miles on it, the wiper track is likely very worn; (e) it is virtually certain that the arm that opens the fuel pump switch is bent; and (f) as the plug is gone, it is likely that a PO has messed with the air bypass screw - perhaps to such an extent that it affects the AFM door movement (it does not open at idle). The engine currently stalls a few seconds after starting, and the idle is slightly uneven. All other sensors test OK.
A Google search just led me to Fuel Injection Corp. I immediately came here to search for the name and was surprised - shocked, actually - that this appears to be the only thread mentioning the company.
Now, I could address most of the issues I enumerated above. Some are quite minor, such as the bent fuel pump switch arm. But I am strongly inclined to send my AFM to these guys for refurbishment and testing, for the peace of mind that the unit is back to original specs. The cost for the resulting "like new" AFM is a fraction of the price of a new OE unit.

K & E
I'm a little hesitant to recommend companies but as I said earlier Robert at FIC treated me right. Injection is all they do, the shop was very well organized, so I went with them and have been very satisfied,

Re: Idle and lack of power solved-AFM
I spoke to a nice young lady who said the fee would be $195. Unfortunately, they did not have a refurbed Spider AFM on the shelf. If that had been the case, she said they would have sent it to me immediately in exchange for mine, at the same price.
