Where is reset button for oxygen sensor?

Post by surfingfreeman »

I had my engine rebuilt and the oxygen sensor was replaced at time of rebuild, but then I must have driven past some set trip mileage that lights up the O2 sensor light, I need to get it smoged and don't need this confounding things. It's a 1982 FI spider 2000, thanks for the help.

It's in that black box type of contraption, my car have been converted from LHD to RHD so don't know it's original location...

I removed mine. If i remember correctly, it is a black plastic box, maybe 2x3" and located near the steering column. It is far bigger than any other component in the area, so should be easy to spot.

Usually above the gas pedal on the side of the steering column mount.

Thank you all for your replies, is this a part that Needs replacing or is there a switch to reset the function? A picture would be great! Thanks so much am getting the car ready for sale. Oh the odometer reads 63,000 miles and the rebuild was done just before 60k with a new O2 sensor installed but I have a feeling the reset was not done

There is a little silver colored cap on the front, which may be safety wired if it's never been disturbed. Unscrew it and stick a little screwdriver into the hole and you'll hear the box resetting. Simple as that.

Thanks toyfiats! That did the trick now fingers crossed it will pass smog and they won't hassle me about Allison's header that I have on there, I did make sure to put on a California cert catalytic converter. Thanks to all again for the help, I think I will take a picture of where my reset box was located with arrow pointing to the silver unscrew able cap, that being said I have a 1982 and it may well vary from year to year. ANYONE LOOKING TO BUY A SWEET 1982 FI spider 2000?

Is this something that needs to be done after replacing the oxygen sensor even if the light is not on? Just wondering because I replaced my sensor as part of my "tune up" last spring as mine was most likely the original and the wire was broken but I never had a light on. I've never even noticed the box you've mentioned and if anyone has a pick that would be great and much appreciated. Another question, if I have not done this, is there any performance or improvements to be had?

It may be a good idea, from what I understand there is a counter in there that gets a signal from the odometer.

You wouldn't believe how much my wiring was butchered because the PO didn't know how to reset it....

Well, I crawled under the dash today to check out this mystery box and after 15 minutes upside down I could not for the life of me find said box. There really isn't to much down there so I don't know where it could hiding. Any help or pics would be greatly appreciated!
