Lightened Flywheel
Well, my Spider has finally gone into my local shop to have the lightened flywheel installed (and a new clutch, etc. while in there). When I get it back I will report on my perceptions of the differences, as I know this is a popular topic here!

Re: Lightened Flywheel
Weather is slowly getting better, will be in mid 40's (F) for 5 days straight! In day 2 of the string now!
The flywheel is Mark's:

I weighed the one from my second engine (an '81) a long time ago, but for the life of me I can't remember the actual weight. I am curious now so I will go weigh it again.

Hamilton winters are brutal. I went to Colgate U. (Class of '83), and one January my normally-reliable Honda Accord failed to start during that entire month.cormac wrote:WTG Pete...any specs/info on lightened flywheel...who did it, weight, etc?

Re: Lightened Flywheel
From Mark's page, "...weighs only 8.5 lbs compared to 13.9 lbs for the stock flywheel". Almost a 5 1/2 pounds savings there.

Re: Lightened Flywheel
the stock flywheel is heavier than the one we weighed. It turns out that one had been lightened already. The stock flywheel is up close to 19lbs

Re: Lightened Flywheel
My memory says that my stock flywheel was 18.? pounds, so that makes sense! I will weigh it again when I get through the snow and find where the garage is.

you'll love the way the engine revs with the aluminum flywheel

Re: Lightened Flywheel
Mark, I can see how it would make a big difference if out of gear but how noticeable a difference does it make as you're running through the gears? So Cal Mark wrote:you'll love the way the engine revs with the aluminum flywheel
Any 0 to 60 testing? If so, can you post the times?
Just curious what $399 gets ya besides 8.5 pounds.
Thanks!

Re: Lightened Flywheel
srwilson: Parasitic losses. Doesn't actively make any more HP or torque, of course, just reduces the parasitic losses. Engine will brake (not break) faster too.
For a simple thought experiment, imagine a 200 pound flywheel, and what it would do to the car's acceleration and deceleration. The reverse is true when weight is removed.

Re: Lightened Flywheel
you'll notice much better acceleration in gear and I'll disagree with the "no hp" claim. My 500 picked up 9hp with the addition of the light flywheel and no other changes.

Re: Lightened Flywheel
Key word "actively" meaning this mod doesn't effect CR, fuel rate, spark, cam timing, etc, etc, but yes a dyno would show more, due to less parasitic loss. Maybe the 2L would go from 103 something to about 113 or more? (+10%)?
