Recently, the car has started bucking...surging, lurching, not smooth...at exactly 1700 RPM. It's like riding a bucking bronco until it gets to 2100, then all is fine. All gears.
Where should I start looking for a cause?

I would start with fuel. clean carb, change filter. Also, pull your plugs and see who they look. how do plug wires look. tight on both ends.

Re: Bucking at 1700 - 2100 RPM
Fuel pressure should be checked, not enough fuel often causes bucking on both carbed and FI cars.

Ditto what Mark said.....what year? Engine? FI or carb etc.
Also, does it happen in that rpm range in all gears?
