The missing part of the equation for passenger cars of a well maintained diesel is the miles. If you drive a lot of miles and maintain the passenger car diesel it is easy to get 300K on the odometer. That needs to be factored into the cost of ownership. Planned obsolescence on "most" regular gas engines is around 10 years or 150K. With a diesel 10 - 15 years and 300K -350K is very likely.

this may be a dumb Q, but I know a 5th wheel as something completely different to what you guys are describing?? So what is a 5th Wheel?

Heavier trailers need to be attached to a center point in the pick up box as opposed to a trailer hitch.

ahhh, have seen only one of those here in Oz and is was used to move the trailers around in a paper recycling plant.

They are literally suitable for full time, multi-year living. Very comfortable! Off we go soon in one, I plan.
