Another spider to rescue?

Post by riverdadd »

We have all seen this scenario: "ran when parked" spider, and the requisite rust bucket parts car. A spider that has been sitting for decades, various critters nesting, slowly rotting into the ground......How can 2 spiders for $300 be a bad deal??

looks like someone is looking to get them hauled off and trying to make a little scratch along with it. They are only worth anything if you need $500 in parts that the cars have that are good. You know they are probably rusted out in the same spots. Mechanically its a crap shoot. After you take off what you need, now you have two dogs to get rid off.

So you picked up 2 Spiders for $150 apiece?

If you look at it as a hobby they will keep you busy enjoying what you like to do.
Guessing if you plan on bringing them back to life, you will put 6K in the each of them and end up with a car that's worth 4.

Nothing wrong with parting them.

a hobby? or an obsession? Maybe Freud could distinguish the differences...... I still have my first X1/9 in the back yard...Perhaps this common affliction we share is actually cheaper than therapy. I'm certain its cheaper than a 25 year old blonde .....this will be my 36th Fiat and 37th if you are counting. Fiats come and Fiats go, but I still have my first one, in addition to the one in my avatar. With this latest BOGO, I will be up to 5 Fiats, on site, and a sister Alfa Spider ..... not to mention Jeeps,Boats,Sea doos,gators,Winnebagos,F250's, 5.0 fox body mustang, mini bus...ect ect ect.... Let's just say I keep my local auto parts store busy...and State Farm... :D

Ok Guys, here is the latest.......... picked up the first spider today,a 1975 title but it must be a late 74...... immediately noticed some anomalies...1st thing was the wheels, a complete set of CD3's if i am correct in identifying them.how rare are these wheels in the USA market??

another thing was a lower chin spoiler that is incorporated into a lower engine shroud, never have seen that! Individual badging on the fuel flap "unleaded fuel only" and another badge on the glove box door , stating the same message, but 1/2 the size as the one on the fuel flap. This spider has the chrome tubular bumpers and the alum fiat badges that always fade out, so it has to be later in the series.....but the front turn signal lights aren't totally flush in the bumper like all the rest i have seen.....its pretty rough, but the bones are there and the engine bay doesn't look molested. typical rust in rear arches and such...crappy paint is peeling. Car was originally orange! someone painted it blue. I know ive seen enough of the orange fiats... must have been a popular color in the 70's....i've probably parted our 5 of these orange ones. im not a fan of that color. interior is salvageable. top is brittle scraps... time will tell if there is life in the old girl.... odometer showes 48000. last state inspection was 2002.......... also got a good look at the other spider that was in the deal. '74 no bump on the hood. total rust bucket, been sitting exposed. missing head, rear end, ect. but has really nice enamel badges , a complete conv top frame with intact header bow, and chrome split bumpers( with rotten overriders).... i will drag that pig home, take whats needed and send the CARcass to the big rust bucket in the sky..... i did get 2 good titles!

not too bad IMHO cant remember the last time i scored 2 fiats for so cheap! (even wifey is impressed...since i showed her that NADA value website  )

The Cd3's seem to be a common item on Spiders of that era but are still AMAZING and worth more than you paid for both cars!

I did a little digging in the day light.... now the ID plate is painted over, but i do see a 7/75 manufacture date. floor pans in great shape.... It has it's fair share of typical previous owner BS engineering. What surprised me, in addition to the external thermostat bypass bodge job, was a pair of tightey whities stuffed in the fresh air inlet of the air cleaner. Also butterfly choke plate has been bent to allow more air! what do these people think? And then the same person will bad mouth a Fiat, saying how theirs always ran like crap...........

Fun Fact: the lower shroud that has the chin spoiler fits around the oil pan, but you have to remove it to access the filter. Probably why i have never seen one. It worries me that the PO maybe never changed the filter

You may want to modify that underneath splash guard/cover, to allow access to the oil filter without having to remove it. Many, if not most cars seem to be missing it, because it makes access to the oil filter a pita, so I guess that it didn't often get put back on.
