Clear Coat Pealing

Post by towinghondas »

Hi my 80 Spider is looking like it got sunburned and now its peeling. So my dilema is how to peel the rest without trashing the paint underneath. I do plan on repainting it next year.
Thanks

that's going to be very difficult. I'd suggest maybe a professional wetsand in the affected area's?

If you're going to repaint next year that is.

For a temporary fix you may be able to wetsand the affected panel and reclear it. The one thing you need to be careful of is sanding into the primer where there is only basecoat. Try using 1500 grit sandpaper with soapy water to feather the edges and roughen up the existing clear so the new clear will adhere to it. Eventually though, you'll be refinishing the car.

You have to sand it - well, professionally sand it - and keep in mind those late Spiders have about 2 coats of paint before you hit the primer. If you begin the process expect it to end with paint + clear.

The clearcoat is the only paint that has a UV inhibitor. Without it, the lower paints will fade and chalk-up. Gotta get clearcoat back on it.
