RPM Tollerence

Post by JerryAebi »

I have a 1974 Spider, with new motor, not bilt, with headers. I'm still runnin with a distributor and points as well. My question is what rpm range can these little babies handle? Are they ok with the rpms up in the 5000? I know some this has to do with the cams I'm running, I think mine are stock. I've been staying away from 5000 rpms due to my motor is fairly new. But I'm just wanting to know if they like the high rpms? Thanks for any input.

I would say 5000 RPM is a matter of routine. Shift in the yellow.

You should not have any problems up to ~7000 rpm. The red line on your tach is at 6500, where the engine does not make any more power, but the engine is strong enough to go to 7000 and even beyond. The danger over 7000 with a stock engine is valve float, where the stock valve springs cannot close the valves fast enough.

I can't seem to get it to get past 5000 rpms without it farting out. What causes that? I'm wait on the distributorless ignition system hoping that will help. I thought I should be able to get it higher than 5000+ rpms.

your points system could be limiting the rpm but it also could be starving for fuel

thanks Mark, I think you're right I'm just waiting for that distributorless ignition system that you guys are waiting for and a dual carburetor setup that ought to do the trick.
