Emissions stuff

In the final planning stages of this year's big parts order ( featuring: SUSPENSION!), and wanting to make sure I didn't overlook anything. I was poking around the engine, and found two emissions system glitches with my 72 1608:

1) The PO cut off the "clean warm air pipe" which runs to the exhaust manifold. A fairly cursory search reveals no place on my manifold for a connection. Any hints appreciated, and, more importantly, is this a "don't worry" issue? Car runs fine, has only 50K on the canister, and sat for most of the last 20 years.

2) During the major work, I decided to swap the original round air cleaner for one of the freer flow high performance air cleaners from A/R. Very happy with the swap. Only concern is that the large hose from the crankcase ventilation system which used to connect to the bottom/rear of the old air cleaner has no place to connect. The A/R cleaner has a small 90 degree elbow out the bottom, but it's way too small to fit the vent hose. Again, ideas/hints welcome, and again, car runs fine, is this a "don't worry" issue?

We don't have smog testing here in the Madison, WI area, so no worries there. Two months of sub-zero temps has focused me on basement projects, but the Fiat itch is starting again. Monthly engine run up's aren't doing it......

On item 2 - I ran without the crankcase breather hose connected for a while, then I ran with a small K&N filter on the end... then I spent some time diagnosing a raw fuel odor. Finally tracked it down to the crankcase breather hose. So I fitted a new nipple to the bottom of my free-flow air cleaner (a K&N) and attached the breather hose. Odor has gone, and all is well. I would recommend doing this.

As to #2: Can you make a bushing out of a piece of rubber hose or PVC? The ID to fit the air cleaner; the OD to fit inside the crankcase breather hose.

reducing the size of the crankcase breather hose so that it matches the air cleaner fitting is a bad idea. That reduction in diameter is enough to cause excessive crankcase pressure resulting in leaks

Your air cleaned should have come with a fitting to connect to the crankcase breather and they are usually too small. I'd fabricate something the right size - those metal plates are easy to cut with a dremel. I find the aluminum fittings you get for electrical conduit work well and create a rigid 90 degree turn (or straight) that locks firmly into the air cleaner. They don't slip out like the plastic thing they ship.

regarding the crankcase hose, i just connected a hose to the aircleaner elbow and then just stuck that hose into the large diameter hose from crankcase ventilation - not a perfect solution but it works, i don't smell oil.

further on this topic - trying to find a replacement for that little elbow hose. i ordered from Vick and its too short on both ends ( think i did this before ). anybody know a good replacement hose?
