Hi all, i own a 124 spider BS with a 1585 cc engine from the 131 supermirafiori built in.
I have also a 1800 cc and 2000 cc engine in my garage. What wil be the best to built into my spider for a bit more (sporty) driving fun ? The engine will be built up with a DMS 34 weber or the IDF 40 's.

My 2L will accelerate reasonably in 5th gear on level ground from 2k rpms, and smoothly too. Plenty of torque with this engine.

The only drawback to the 2000 is reduced hood-to-engine clearance. The problem areas will be the cambox mounted distributor and the cambelt cover. I ended notching the cambelt cover so it would not touch the center rib of the hood.

I also like a engine that has a good torque.
@ Vandor; my engine has the block mounted distrubutor, so i hope that the hood-engine clearance will be ok.

you will still have contact with the center support of the hood and the cam belt cover. It isn't serious but you will see some rubbing there. I notched my center support.

Keep what you have, rebuild it with new rings, bearings, valves, etc., and put the IDFs on it.

I also have a hood of a 2.0 l USA model. Thanks Brad, but i already started to rebuild the 2.0 liter ( 1800 is still ok) . Next year whe going to do a trip to Italie, back where the spider came from, across the Frech alpes and Italian dolomits. Yep - especially on small motors. The problems with 40 IDFs start around the 1800cc motors; they're too small. By the time you get the 2000cc you make sacrifices to make them work. But on a 1600cc (either one, 1585 or 1608) they're a lot of fun. Fun on a 1438cc as well.RoyBatty wrote:Wait a second,

I like twin carbs. My suggestions have always been for people to enjoy their cars, and you have to really like carburetors to deal with IDFs. If you just want to drive and have fun there are much better ways to go.

@ Brad , i always thought that the 40 idf's are too big for my 1600 cc engine.
Maybe i wil try this first, but i think i have a small problem whith the distributor, he is mounted on the block, not on the head. And what will be the best jet settings for my 1600 engine ? The carb's are the original webers of the 1608 BS1 engine, buth they have being used on a 2.0 engine.

Jetting - no idea. There is a whole IDF setup thread on this website you should read. As far as the size I think they are a good match to the stock 1600cc engines in either displacement. I think they barely fit an 1800 and are awful on the 2000. I'm fairly certain the 2000 was designed for fuel injection and the wretched carburetor they came up with was a stop-gap because the FI system wasn't ready.
