How do I replace my cowl vent grills?

Keeping it sharp - paint, wax, detailing, etc.

How do I replace my cowl vent grills?

Post by TFichter »

Hi! Can anyone explain to me the best way to replace my cowl vent grills? I have removed the cowl but it seems that there is a great deal of spot welded sheet metal in my way. I have a 1982 2000 spider.
Thanks,
Tom

there are a couple of flat clips about 2" long that secure the plastic pieces. remove those and you can slide the plastic pieces out without having to mess with the rain deflector.

Thank you! I guess that means I can leave the windshield wiper motor in place too!?

There should be a solid plastic weather shield and rubber vibration pieces sandwiched between the motor and the plastic vent grill. I remove the entire wiper motor/arm assembly to access the plastic vent grills. There are 4 bolts at the motor bracket to remove and the 2 nuts on the wiper arms for the assembly to be lifted off the cowl.

There are 3 rubber screws that need to be removed before removing the grill. Most of these screws are old and brittle and you may ruin them removing. AR has new replacements

Thank you all. I figured some of this out before your last replies but I was able to replace the grills by only loosening the wiper motor bolts, removing the metal clips as well as backing out the rubber screws. Then I slid both vent grills out the wiper motor end of the cowl. I was fortunate that the rubber screws remained healthy. However, the thin plastic shield that fits between the wiper motor and the grills was very brittle and cracked but it was repairable.
