Exhaust stud gone missing

Post by ga.spyder »

 Does the rear most exhaust manifold(stock 82),go into an oil galley? I am putting the motor back together, after having the head reworked, and I have a leftover nut with nothing to thread it onto. Not sure where the stud has gone. There should be 4...right? :? I am not sure if somehow it has broken off or not.Does anyone know what thread size and length it is? It is gonna be a bitch to get at!!

There are 5 exhaust studs, and the rearmost one does not go into an oil gallery.

Thanks Csaba. I do have 4 in place.I was so careful to bag and tag every fastener. The only thing I can figure is that it may have broken off when I was removing the exhaust manifold. It definitely was not there when I put the new gasket on.I didn't think anything about it then!
I will go ahead and take the exhaust manifold off :( ,and see if I can remove the broken stud.I am not sure if that is even possible with the engine installed ? If so,what size/pitch is that stud?

Thanks Joe.I have them all except the one closest to the firewall.Yeah...the hardest one to get to! I have the manifold on,but not torqued down.I am headed to the garage to take the manifold off,and see what I can do about this.It all came apart way too smoothly

Yes,David.I have made my way out there  My issue seems to be that I need to get the exhaust manifold completely off in order to gain enough room to get the broken stud out.Previously,I had just pulled it away enough to get the head off. I soaked the flange at the bottom of the manifold(where it meets the exhaust pipes) with PB Blaster. The first nut came loose. The next, snapped. The others are so frozen from 30+ years of heat cycles that they feel like they will also break .So....I have been getting the intake side all put back together  Now that is done so I have to figure out how to proceed.I am considering trying a torch to loosen them up.If they break,I will have to drill them out and use some new fastners. It is the ''old snowball effect''

Good Luck, I hope once you get the manifold off you find an easy solution with the stud in the head. Do you have heat in the garage??

I have a wood-burning stove in the garage, but the last few days have been awesome.I was working on the car this morning, and I heard something calling my name.Yep....my Harley :D I took an 60 mile motorcycle ride! Temps in the 60's!!
The exhaust stud shouldn't really be a big deal,if I can make space to get a drill in there.
