screechhhhh
Re: screechhhhh
That is the wonderful thing about the web, there are indeed polite forums out there, and other that are not so polite for those folks who like that kind of thing.
Agreed, his 2nd post was the kicker. But he was responding to a less than warm welcome.

Re: screechhhhh
Let me say that Aj did a great job in the manner he responded to johnnie. Had i been the first responder, i don't think i'd be likely to have responded in the same manner. That said, kudos to you Aj! Great job!
As for our responses being "tasteless", there is a group of members here that i hold high admiration for, including you majicwrench. Tomorrow, should someone walk in to this forum and out of the blue disrespect you, i would "let go" and do this all over again. Most probably so would the other posters. It wont stigmatize our forum.
We are not a rude bunch, we are attracted here partly for the interest of our cars and partly to the respectful relationship that we have for each other. Without the respect, this forum goes down the toilet. We defended the territory and now we move on.
As for johnnie, stuff happens, back up two steps and let's start over again.

So this is still a thing?
Think people just need to stop taking everything so personally and let others speak for themselves and learn to let it go

Re: screechhhhh
I just read through all this for the first time, and unfortunately I am reminded of what happened when my son tried to get some very basic information off of the VW GTI forum (what type and grade of oil did most owners use, etc.). He is pretty much an auto enthusiast newcomer and knows little of a technical nature, so he asked a few basic questions but always seemed to get a critical, snide response. He left the forum almost immediately. I surmised that this was because that forum likely has a majority of 20 somethings that haven't yet formed basic civility habits or have something to prove by puffing out their chests online. Let's avoid that crap here, eh? This forum has a marked lean towards tolerance, assistance and civility. Good stuff.

Re: screechhhhh
I find this forum to be the best , even when I ask some dumb questions, I get a very good answer in return, same as if need some used parts one chimes in to sell or give for free and pay only shipping. So if one of the members makes a small remark do not take it the wrong way we are all grown up and don't need to be cuddled.

Re: screechhhhh
Johnnie's original question wasn't worded as badly or as vauge as some of the questions asked here by our long time users. To be met with a "you need to open the hood" is maybe ok with someone we know or are use to but for a newcomer maybe not so. As innocent as it may have been this was the trigger.
This is a great little forum and one I have pleasure in flicking through from time to time. Please don't let it be like others where the peer users that have all the time of day to be on it end up making it their own. That's when guys with the technical knowledge start to become disenchanted and disappear, they are the guys that give real interactive info that you can't always replace with a stale old google search.
...and those nemes, what's the go with that? The humor or message in those are just about as poor as that guy on that hood pic I use to see on here. They remind me of teenage facebook comments.

Re: screechhhhh
what it comes down when asking a question like that is that it wastes everyones' time. If you can't bother to include a bare minimum of information you can't expect an answer that is helpful. The op couldn't be bothered to put any effort into a solution. From his original post, it wasn't apparent that he had even bothered to open the hood nor had the seller of the car. Who hears a noise, parks the car and sells it or purchases it without determining the source of the problem? If you want a detailed answer, ask a detailed question.

Agreed, no way could we have given an answer that was helpful, the content was very vague but we see heaps of these types of questions asked. Why do we tolerate some and not all?

Re: screechhhhh
I think that this horse is probably well and truly dead.
On the whole we're a nice bunch on here (let's keep it that way). Sure the OP didn't put really anything that would help a deep diagnosis... if we had all turned around and said "90% of the time a random screeching from under the hood is always X, Y or Z" then it wouldn't have been a problem. We needed more information, and things kind of escalated from there.
Let's keep ourselves tolerant
As for those memes.... they're from Canadians... what can you expect eh?

Re: screechhhhh
WOW I was going to post a meme of a "Bullseye".toplessexpat wrote:As for those memes.... they're from Canadians
But... as you know Target has left Canada.
I feel I owe an explanation of my Newfoundland rum meme, which some of you obviously found to be poor taste. Having savored this type of rum in the past, it is not poor tasting.
1st off, I am retired and my Spider is stored away from me until spring.
2ndly (is that a word?) It is freagin' cold up here and I am not that big on winter outdoor sports.
So of course I spend (too much) time on the internet. When I boot up my PC, this site is my home page. Always check new post 1st. Seems lately at the top of the list is the topic "screechhhhh". I refer back to point #2, "It is freagin' cold up here", I kept seeing that topic and kept thinking of that fine Newfoundland rum. Those of you that have been there and screeched in will relate.
There was no insinuation that the PO was drunk or should be.
One thing we all do on this site is learn and share. You can't put a value on having access to others' "lessons learned" and experiences (good and bad). I wish I could share more technical experiences with all of you but, I admit it, I really don't do much to my car. I am blessed to have met a guy locally that has lotsa parts and has worked on these cars for years. So I can't really share much. But I do learn alot and the odd time I will chime in or add a meme which hopefully reflects what i want to say, with a bit of humor.
Since my sense of humor seems to be only shared by few, I will (are ya ready for it...) refrain from Meming you.

If every person on this forum had to stop and think about how everyone who reads their post might feel, the forum might be blank (obvious joke). That being said, we have guidelines, we have moderators and we have our peers. WTF? so people who can access the forum more frequently are going to push out those with technical knowledge? How do you know that they too, do not have the same or perhaps more technical knowledge (retired mechanics etc etc etc). So providing people with a direct link to information (stale or otherwise) is not real or interactive info? Using some broad strokes on that brush of yours my friend.
No response needed, just something to think about.
Oh yeah, while I'm at it
