screechhhhh

Post by johnnie »

Just bought my third Fiat spider, a 1979 with an automatic. Makes a screeching noise, very loud, from under the hood. Guy I bought it from said it started making this noise and he just pulled over and had the car towed home. He said he thought it was the engine bearings. Any ideas out there? I'm hoping it is the tensioner.

seized air pump or loose fan belt. First step would be to open the hood

I will try to be more informative. I am a motorcycle mechanic. I don't have any experience with fiat engines. I was hoping to connect with someone familiar with fiats, who may have encountered this before. The airpump is disconnected. Water pumps start leaking coolant long before the bearings have a chance to make any noise, and smartass responses from some nerd with a craftsman toolbox are not appreciated.

This is generally a polite board. If you're looking for help it probably would be good to bear that in mind.

The person you just insulted is the moderator of the board and arguably one of the top 5 most knowledgeable Fiat guys in the world.

Perhaps Mark was terse, but even I as a nerd with a Harbor Freight toolbox would expect that you could open the hood and identify the area of the engine that the sound was coming from pretty easily. If it's an internal noise then a stethoscope or screwdriver pressed in various places will help isolate the area. "I have a screech" is not much information to go by, and aggressive responses to those who bother to respond to such a generic problem description is not likely to result in follow-up help.

I'll drink to that. Cheers, Aj.

As for the screeching you are better to hope that it's not a jammed tensioner, otherwise the motor's getting overhauled.

well, one of my many toolboxes is a Craftsman. It was my first rollaway when I was a teenager  Since then I've accumulated at least 4 more much larger rollaway boxes.
Bottom line is ya still gotta open the hood or endure endless speculation about cats stuck in pulleys. I'd think an ace motorcycle mechanic would have the smarts to at least ask an intelligent question

Opening the hood was not in any way a "smart assed remark"
It's called levity, humor.
Ease up and quit looking for reasons to be offended and I'm sure you will find many in here are VERY helpful.
Now open the hood, look around and give us some more info to help you.

Damn. Literally all of my hand tools are Craftsman and have been since about 1990. I feel sorry for the cars I worked on, they suffered from the lack of $35 sockets and $200 handles from Snap On...

On topic: disconnect the belt that drives the water pump and alternator. if the noise goes away then inspect the water pump and alternator.

I know this is off topic but some old sayings come to mind

A craftsman is as good as his tools

The tools don't make a craftsman

A true craftsman isn't someone who never makes a mistake rather someone who can hide them so no one notices.

A saying by an old geezer I worked with years ago was :-

"The biggest definition of a time waster is someone who asks for advice and then gives you ten reasons why he doesn't want it"
My two cents ain't worth what it used to be

Good advice is always certain to be ignored, but that's no reason not to give it.
