Changing paint color

Post by 70spider »

Painting the car is still a little ways off, but I have a couple questions. I never have had a car painted and have no idea what to expect at the body shop. Can the shop create the paint color from a code? The color I would like is Ferrari Verde Medio Met 106-G-29.

Also should I strip the car myself? And how far should I strip it to the primer or all to bare metal?

It is preferable to pick a standard paint code so the paint can be matched in the future. All the work in painting is in the prep. Unless you've done this before, plan on it taking you 10 times longer than a professional shop. Most painters will want to sand it again anyhow because they don't trust your work. If something goes wrong with the paint, you have not recourse if the painter did not prep the car. If you change color and want a clean job, expect it to be a lot more money to paint the jams, trunk, engine compartment, etc.

I know this color is different, but I wanted to create a little Ferrari, silly huh? As for the door jams and trunk I don't see the point, besides the color change wouldn't be to different from the original. Thanks for the info its going to be a little while before I get to the painting.
