Engine Paint Color

Post by tartan18 »

My local machine shop is rebuilding my engine (new bearings, pistons, etc) and will repaint it in a color of my choosing. The previous owner painted it black. I want a color that shows off any future oil leaks and light gray has been suggested. Any comments/recommendations?

I used Duplicolor Engine (500F) Enamel in New Ford Gray.

This is a great thread, tons of pictures of engines. I'm in the process of stripping and repainting my engine bay and parts and this thread gave me tons of ideas. http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... 15&t=16483

x2 for the Ford gray. FIAT engines were gray and should be that way. Keep the aluminum bare. Black parts should be black. and so on.

Agree with Ford gray. Available in rattle can so it's cheap to apply.
Any leaks show up easy.

Ford Gray is what I am going to use. Pictures will be posted when I get the engine back from the machine shop. Thanks for the advice.

Would you all be terribly offended if i painted my engine daytona yellow?

I figured I'd paint all the cast parts (including aluminum) yellow, and paint the sheet and forged parts gloss black.

I think it'd look pretty keen with the yellow timing cover.

Well yeah, sorta!

Last year i rebuilt a 1984 VW 1.6TD and painted it green as per tradition, but left the aluminum bare. It looked great on the stand. In the car with everything bolted on, you can hardly tell that it's pretty.

Sounds hideous (you did ask after all). I know this: the engines are interesting perhaps, but they aren't worth looking at for very long. Close the hood and drive it. It isn't mean to be sitting still with a bunch of glossy engine paint (most of which will flake/burn/change color as soon as it is exposed to heat).
