I kown that Motor oils is a issue that has been spoken many times.
But I liked to rise it up once a gain.
I'm using at the moment Mobil Delvac 15w-40, but it seem that there is not enough zinc in it.
The old Delvac has enough zinc.
I did a little bit research and I got some info but I'm not happy yet.
Here is Mobil oil table of their Mobil1 olis:
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/Mot ... _Guide.pdf
Then I made a question to Liqui Moly (big german oil maker) and here is their answer:
We have arranged your inquiry and we can recommend the following product.
Liqui Moly MoS2 Low Friction Art.-Nr. 1091
As additional wear protection it contains the solid lubricant molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)
guarantees optimum lubrication under extreme operating conditions and with long oil change.
The ZDDP content was reduced and replaced by additive.
The oil for your Fiat Spider need the spezification API SE, so you can use our MoS2 Leichtlauf 10W-40.
Then we have one extra possibily with additives, it looks and seem like a tv-shop product, but it is not (look TUV-test, TUV is the main testing company in germany). I know some Jaguar guys who have positive experiences with RVS, also I have used it, but not long enough to say anything.

Ok, I liked to know what oil do you use at the moment and do you use any additives.

Probably a bit harder to find in your neck of the woods, but I noticed a stockist in Sweden on their list. It's got plenty of zinc in it, but the viscosity may be a bit high for your northern winters.

Re: Motor oil
You will pay a kings ransom for Liqui-Moly ,or the other specialty oils. Why not just use the Delvac and add the zddp to it? It is sold in many parts stores and I know that SoCal Mark offers it on his website. That is a inexpensive alternative, without sacrificing any protection for our motors.

Re: Motor oil
I have to take alittle bit back my word about Delvac.
I got the answer from Mobil, zinc=1400ppm, phosp.=1300ppm (weight).
The liqui moly additive is not expencive <10€/oil change.
And if you buy a bigger can, then it's even cheaper.
But it seems that I do not need any additives, or..?

Re: Motor oil
I just did a rebuild and use Rotella-T 15W-40 at the recommendation of board members on here. It exceeds the Fiat specs, and is easy to get here, and very reasonable.

Re: Motor oil
No additives required if you use the Shell Rotella diesel oil, correct?

Re: Motor oil
That has always been my understanding. But,as you know everytime we have a oil thread it creates a huge difference of opinion.Bottom line(to me anyways),the diesel oils do contain zinc.If you don't feel its enough..add some more zinc. I have never heard of any Fiat having engine failure because of the type of oil they were/weren't using. I personally am going on 9 years using Rotella,on a 90000 mile Spider that has never been apart at all.Pretty good testimony?

Re: Motor oil
Hi,
I use Schneider Oil additive in my Spider, and in my Buick's, for fresh rebuilds and engines with miles on them. Never had a problem. You can order it on line, they ship USPS or UPS.

Thanks Bruce
