How to remove door panels?

Post by johnsje6 »

I am prepping my '79 for a paint job this winter, and have everything off but the door handles. I have the 5 screws removed from the door panels, and the inside door handle and armrest, but I need some advice on the window crank and any other fasteners that may be hiding in there.

Also, as an unexpected bonus, I found the second source of the mouse urine odor in my barn find - this one behind the package shelf Image

1. Don't lean on the door like that guy appears to do (he may not, it's hard to tell).

2. Likely you do not have that special tool to remove the clip from the window winder. Take a rag and slide it between the window winder and the trim ring and move it back and forth in a parallel direction with the winder's 'handle'.
The rag will catch the upturned end of the clip and pull it out.

IAP has these fancy videos, but a lot of them don't tell you what you need to know...

Thanks guys! I just picked up a door/window hardware tool kit at Harbor Freight for $7, it has the magic window crank tool, along with 3 more that will probably come in handy for removing trim. But the video is very good, it actually shows you what the clip looks like, which makes removal much easier.

As a note, you can reinstall the window crank clip while its off. when you go to reinstall, just pop the crank on the peg, clip and all.

Thanks for the reinstall tip, was hoping that was the case. Photo below of the $7 tool kit from Harbor Freight.
