Things not to do

Post by spidernut »

Today, I decided to remove the dash and both consoles on my car, clean everything up, organize the wiring, fix my clock and faded lens, fix the glove box alignment, fix some wiring that was modified by the prior owner, etc. After removing the dash, I decided it needed a nice fresh coat of flat black vinyl paint. I cleaned the dash up and readied it for spraying. I grabbed the can of vinyl paint and started spraying. It was laying down in an odd way and was glossier than expected. I figured the caps might have been switched inadvertently, so I grabbed my can of gloss vinyl paint and sprayed a test spot. It was mega shiny. Well, that wasn't the problem.

I went back and sprayed some more flat black vinyl paint on it. When it dried, it was still too shiny. I placed it in a warm spot in the sun and then walked back to the work bench and realized that I sprayed my dash with high temperature engine enamel. Now my dash is good up to 500 degrees and is gasoline and oil resistant!

Add a heater to the glove box and you might have a nice toaster oven!

" ...... realized that I sprayed my dash with high temperature engine enamel".

I hate it when that happens!

Sorry I laughed, but couldn't help it!

I wish I could make up (for the laughing) by having a suggestion as to what to do now.
I'm sure you are in a bit of a delemia, as paint & vanish remover may not be your best option?

Please let us know what you did to fix the problem, and how it turned out.
I sincerely hope it ends well!

When I sprayed my dash with a plastic paint it came out too shiny (too much glare). I found that carefully wiping it with acetone cut the glare. I am happy with the way it turned out. Maybe this will also work with engine enamel paint?

Acetone and enamel do not play well together. The enamel will craze. Sometimes with a slight delay. Dont let acetone sit on it.

Once I got over my own stupid mistake, I had to laugh too. The good news is that I realized that it actually looks nice. It looks like it was just Armour All'd. I think I'll leave it. It would probably cause more damage to try to remove the paint than to just leave it alone. How do I know? I've used VHT high temp engine enamel on my air cleaner canister and had the paint resist causing me to have to remove the paint once it was dried. It took three coats of Jasco paint stripper to get about 75% of it off. I then had to sand off the rest. This stuff is quite durable when dry and is chemical resistant to say the least. Take a guess what brand engine enamel I accidentally grabbed and sprayed on the dash...yup...VHT high temp engine enamel. I think it is there to stay.

How about a light coating of black trim paint? Will that sit ok on the VHT?

Yo spidernut,

These Dashs are easy to recover by an experienced auto upholster. Make it like new again.
