Speedometer tick bounce and shimmy

Post by fiasco »

My speedometer ticks and bounces signficiantly.

Here's a view during deceleration from 40 to 0.

And here's a view at a constant 40 mph.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks,

I used 3-in-1 oil on my tach cable and it pretty much solved the same problem, but I suggest pulling it out and cleaning it too, mine was full of gray paste from wear and crud in there. I think the speedo is the same and you can slide the core out for cleaning. Just make sure that it attaches correctly to the back of the gauge, it is a little tricky.

If you wanted to be thorough, You could:

1. unattach it from both ends. unscrew from transmission and let dangle. remove clip thingy from speedo (yours might screw on the speedo)

2.pull cable out. clean cable with carb cleaner. lubricate cable with lithium grease or wheel bearing grease.

3. spray carb cleaner through empty cable sheath until no more crud comes out.

4. reinstall.

Usually when this happens though its because the cable is slightly bent. Just buy a new one if it gives you any trouble. They are like 15 bucks.
